What I do when I'm not at work: running macOS on hardware Apple never made, and bringing old iPods back to life.

My Hackintosh

My desktop is a Hackintosh - a PC I built from regular parts that also runs macOS. It has an AMD processor, which Apple has never used in a Mac, so getting macOS on it took some extra work. It works great though, and I can boot it into Windows 11, macOS Sequoia or CachyOS Linux, whichever I need.

What works

Pretty much everything - graphics acceleration, WiFi and Bluetooth all work. The one thing that doesn't is Netflix (and other DRM video) in Safari, because my graphics card isn't compatible with it. It plays fine in every other browser, so it's easy to live with.

What's inside

If you're curious, this is what's in it:

CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600
GPU Radeon RX 6700 XT
RAM 16GB DDR4 at 3200MHz, dual channel
Storage About 2TB of SSDs
WiFi Fenvi T919, with Bluetooth

My computers

This part is still being written. Content about my computers will be added soon, so check back later!

I enjoy collecting, repairing, and modifying vintage Apple products, like iPods. I open them, repair them if needed and then modify them with larger batteries, replace the internal spinning hard drive with an SD card and also flash custom firmware on them! It's a really fun hobby and being able to tinker with them is really calming.

iPod Video (5.5th generation)

The last iPod Video before the Classic took over, from 2006. Mine has a see-through front, so you can watch the circuit board while the music plays. It also runs a customised firmware that makes it look more like the Classic's. It's not perfect, but it looks nicer and shows the album art while a song is playing.

  • 5000mAh battery
  • 128GB SD card in place of the hard drive
  • Black click wheel and transparent top case
  • Custom firmware styled like the iPod Classic

iPod Mini (2nd generation)

The small aluminium one, from 2005. Its tiny spinning hard drive is gone, swapped for flash storage that's silent and doesn't mind being dropped.

  • New battery
  • 64GB of Compact Flash storage
